Lessons From the Child
Bubbles

I wish you could have seen the way
that your eyes lit up when the sea of bubbles
floated past your head
You yelled with joy and amusement
as the bubbles collided,
bursting against one another in mid flight
You ran to me and pointed, your excitement contagious
as you shifted from leg to leg trying to blow more bubbles
from the plastic stick in your hand
I thought about the beauty of your excitement
over such a simple thing,
how you pointed and looked at them with amazement on your face
And I smiled at you,
my spirit pleased with your pleasure,
and I said “I see the pretty bubbles”
How far we’ve come
from bubbles to DNA
from walks on the shore to exploring a world beneath the sea
from healing a wound to moving a heart
from flight in the clouds to flight into space
These discoveries, these feats,
the finest of human accomplishments,
representing human spirit in flight,
excellence mounted upon wings
Maybe one day, in our finest moment
while on our journey to new parts of the universe,
places that even with our science now we cannot imagine,
we’ll encounter His face,
the part of His spirit that smiles
And with pleasure in His eyes,
considering our journey into this new corner of His canvas,
our ships like bubbles floating through the universe,
busting against the code which created that which exists from nothing,
He’ll smile at our excitement and say
“Pretty bubbles”
